Judy Terwilliger
Teaches at Meadowood: Wed & Thu
Judy Terwilliger has played violin virtually all her life, beginning at age five and performing throughout her elementary and high school years. In high school, she performed as a member of the Philadelphia All City Orchestra and, along with select members of that ensemble, had the opportunity to play with the Philadelphia Orchestra. As a Music Education major at Temple University, she performed with the Temple University Orchestra under Jonathan Sternberg at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Judy also played with The Hawaiians at the Academy of Music and with an ensemble specializing in Renaissance and early classical music. She was the fiddler for Crow Hill, and she continues to perform locally as a violinist—both as a soloist and in ensembles such as The Sunday Sinfonia and Berks Sinfonietta.
Before joining the teaching staff at Meadowood Music, Judy studied classical violin for 17 years under renowned teachers: Alma Grafe (a student of Fritz Kreisler), Edgar Ortenberg (Budapest String Quartet), and Julian Meyer (Temple University). She also studied piano for six years.
Judy continues to play classical violin and currently pursues master instruction with Simón Maurer. She also explores the use of violin in traditional music and has taken additional master instruction in fiddling styles with Ken Gehret.
In addition to her active performance schedule, Judy is the principal violinist and Concertmaster of the Sunday Sinfonia, the President of the Board for the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, and the Coordinator of the Vermont Music and Arts Center’s Chamber Music Program. Alongside violin, viola, cello, and piano, Judy also plays—and teaches—Appalachian dulcimer and hammered dulcimer.
Judy teaches beginning through advanced violin and viola, beginning through advanced-intermediate fiddling, beginning through intermediate piano/keyboard, and beginning dulcimer and hammered dulcimer. She works with children and adults, using formal method books, demonstration, and ear training to meet each student’s needs. Meadowood is very excited to offer Judy’s musical and teaching skills to the community.
Students visit Meadowood Music from communities throughout Berks County and the Lehigh Valley — including Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem, Kutztown, Fleetwood, and Boyertown — for private music lessons. We also sometimes have students who travel to us from places as distant as Lancaster, Harrisburg, the Philadelphia area, and occasionally from New Jersey, New York City, Baltimore, and Washington DC.
